The University Board is the governing body of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and its business is conducted in accordance with the Instrument and Articles of Government. It delegates certain responsibilities to committees which are serviced and supported by the Clerk to the Board.
The University was founded in Preston during 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. Since those early days it has grown into one of the UK’s largest universities with a staff and student community approaching 38,000 and an employment-focused course portfolio containing over 350 undergraduate programmes and nearly 250 postgraduate courses.
As a truly global institution, with an established campus in Cyprus, UCLan’s student body includes 120 nationalities and its partnership network extends to 125 countries. In China, UCLan is the leading UK University in terms of students studying on its courses in-country.
UCLan’s course portfolio is informed by its growing community of researchers who have built a reputation for world-leading or internationally excellent delivery within the areas of business, health, humanities and science.

Central to the initial phase of development is a £30m+ Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) which will establish UCLan as a leading University for engineering innovation. It will lead to an increase of 500 locally trained graduates each year and play an important role in the evolution of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
UCLan’s EIC development links closely with its focus on employability where over 92 percent of those studying full-time, first degree courses are in employment or further study six months after graduating. The University actively encourages entrepreneurship and self-employment; it is the leading University in the UK for the number of graduate enterprises still thriving after three years.
The Board of Governors has a vital role in planning UCLan's future and ensuring that the highest standards are being met.
